Stump Grinding

Below grade, ready to replant

We grind stumps below the surrounding grade, deep enough to seed grass, lay sod, or plant over the spot. The alternative, digging a stump out, tears up a crater of lawn and costs more. Grinding is faster, cleaner, and the standard for residential properties.

Why bother removing a stump

• Mowing. One hidden stump costs a mower blade, or worse.
• Regrowth. Many species, especially maples and crapemyrtles, sucker back from a live stump for years.
• Insects. Rotting stumps are standing invitations for carpenter ants and termites, and nobody wants those finding the house next.
• The look. A ground and seeded spot disappears into the lawn in a season.

What happens to the grindings

Grinding produces a mound of wood chips mixed with soil. We can leave them to settle, spread them as mulch, or haul them and backfill with topsoil and seed so the spot is ready to grow. Pair it with fall aeration and overseeding and the patch vanishes into the rest of the turf.

Grinding is often quoted alongside a removal, but we also come out for stump-only jobs, including the old stumps the last company left behind.
